AMBULATORY
DRAWING
Drawing whilst walking makes it possible to record the visual and physical experience of moving through the landscape. During this activity the walker-drawer becomes part of the environment alongside the other flora and fauna living there and the drawings document the visual dynamics of this transient experience.
Using a harness to hold a drawing board in place whilst walking facilitates drawing with both hands. This creates a fully embodied continuum between earth, drawing and air that blurs the boundary between walking and drawing. Consequently, the process becomes physically dynamic allowing the reciprocal action of ground and hips or wind and upper body to participate in the act of drawing.
The uncertainty of this activity can be overwhelming. However, when one yields to these unchoreographed movements the drawings begin to exhibit characteristics that could not have emerged had the walker-drawer not become dynamically passive with-in the environment.
